Plantation Day..Read more
We left the vibrant Crescent City and visited a few plantations on our way to Hot Springs, AR. First up was Laura Plantation. It is a Louisana Creole's Heritage Site. Laura Plantation is over 12,000 acres. It sits about 600 feet from the Mississippi River..but you can not longer see the river from the house due to a levee.
The colors are the original colors that were discovered on a picture from the 1800's. At its height of sugar cane production, it had nearly
200 workers enslaved on the plantion.
Original slave "homes". Two families of 8 to 10 people lived in each building.
Beautiful magnolias everywhere.
Next up, and just down the road a few miles, is Oak Alley Plantation. The Plantation was named after its canopied alley, made of southern live oaks that used to run from the house to the river. It now stops at the road.
I could not stop taking photos of that beautiful entrance!
Funny, we had a live Oak in our house in FL. It's just not the same! 😂
