Porto, Portugal (Sept 27-Oct 11) Part I

Image
Porto is a beautiful city. From it's many beautiful tiled buildings to the old cobblestone streets and alleys..we loved every bit of it. This is Ponte Luis I. Porto is known for it's 6 bridges spanning the Douro River. This photo shows looking from Porto over to Vila Nova de Gaia. The bridge has the upper span with sidewalks and rails for the metro. The lower span is for walking and taxis. No private cars.It was designed by Théophile Seyrig. He was one of Gustave Eiffel's partners. You can recognize that in the metalworking. For a tourist, it allows easy access to both riverbanks. The Douro Valley is know for it's lush hillsides that produce the grapes for Port wine. Port wine can only be named "port" if it comes from this region .It's sweet, and high in alcohol..about 20%, due to the fermentation process they use. Douro Valley. Unfortunately our trip there was cancelled...this is a stock ...

Kennebunkport, ME and New Brunswick, CA

Image
So, Kennebunkport is a classic New England town..but it was packed with tourists. Reminded me a bit of Mystic Seaport. We stopped at St Ann's by the Sea to see this beautiful church.  Weather permitting they do services outside. Too bad by Sunday we were gone. We stopped by Walker's Point to see the Bush compound. The Texas flag was flying, which means they're in residence. But despite waving and trying to get the secret service's attention, no one invited us over!  Sign by the road. These SS guys don't fool around. Walking on Goose Rocks Beach.  Chilling at our glamping site and trying to keep up with my journal. Stopped by The Wedding Cake House, the " most photographed house in the state of Maine". Had to see for myself why. Cute entrance to our campground. ...

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Image
We arrived to our Airbnb in New Market, VA. It was new and really nice. It even had a hot tub to rest our tired muscles..which came in handy. The next day we went to Shenandoah National Park hiking. So happy leaving on our hike! But 5 miles, 910 ft of elevation and scrambling over wet, slippery rocks changed our attitude a bit!  Our "trail". We didn't bring enough water and no snacks. We were beat!! 4 hrs later, this is how we left.😂 Just kidding! It rained constantly for the next 2 days. 60 degrees. So we hunkered down at the Airbnb, watched Netflix (I liked War Soldier) and I made comfort food. (Chicken and noodles) And, darn it, we couldn't go out for another hike! Left to drive to our next stop, New River Gorge National Park. It's the newest national park in the US. On our way, we went through George Washington National Forest and Monongahela National Forest. Did a quick mile ...
